What is 7075 Aluminum Machining?

Known as the “Super-Aluminum,” 7075 aluminum is one of the strongest alloys available for CNC machining, offering a tensile strength that rivals many structural steels. At RapidDirect, we specialize in processing 7075-T6 via high-speed 5-axis milling to deliver components that demand extreme durability and stress resistance. While it maintains a lightweight profile, its excellent thermal properties and polished machinability make it the gold standard for high-end aerospace, high-performance racing, and defense applications. Whether for heavy-duty gears or intricate structural airframes, our process ensures the highest level of mechanical integrity.

Surface Finishing Options for 7075 Aluminum Machining

RapidDirect offers a long list of surface finishes as part of its aluminum CNC machining service to improve the quality of every machined product. Each surface finish is tailored to enhance the mechanical properties and appearance of aluminum machined parts.

As machined
As-machined aluminum parts come directly from the mill with visible tool marks. This finish is cost-effective, maintains tight tolerances, and has a surface roughness ranging from Ra 0.2 to 3.2 µm.
Anodizing
Anodizing enhances aluminum's corrosion and wear resistance by thickening its oxide layer. It can be dyed in various colors, improving heat dissipation and offering aesthetic and functional benefits.
Powder Coating
Powder coating provides bright, durable, UV-resistant colors. It involves spraying dry paint on prepped aluminum, then baking for a smooth, corrosion-resistant finish. Environmentally friendly, it avoids solvents and VOCs used in traditional liquid painting.
Electroplating
This process uses electrolysis to deposit a thin metal layer on aluminum, enhancing its conductivity, strength, and resistance to UV light, abrasion, and corrosion. Common deposition metals include copper, nickel, gold, titanium, silver, zinc, and chromium.
Painting
Painting applies a spray layer to enhance a part's appearance and protect against corrosion and wear. It offers customizable colors, including Pantone matches, with finishes ranging from matte to gloss to metallic.
Sand Blasting
Sandblasting uses pressurized fluid and sand to clean aluminum surfaces and create various textures. It removes debris, shapes the surface precisely, and achieves detailed profiles, enhancing both appearance and functionality.
Polishing
Polishing aluminum creates a reflective, durable surface that resists contamination and oxidation. It's ideal for custom parts in medical equipment, automotive, retail, and interior design, offering both functionality and an attractive finish.

Pros and Cons of 7075 Aluminum CNC Machining

Pros

  • Extreme Strength-to-Weight Ratio: 7075-T6 offers a tensile strength of up to 570 MPa, providing maximum structural support with minimum weight—essential for aerospace performance.
  • Excellent Fatigue Resistance: Its micro-structure is engineered to withstand constant vibration and cyclic loading, significantly extending the lifespan of moving parts.
  • Highly Machinable: Despite its hardness, it produces clean, crisp chips and can be machined to an incredibly smooth surface finish, reducing the need for intensive post-processing.
  • Superior Thermal Properties: It dissipates heat efficiently and maintains better dimensional stability under fluctuating temperatures compared to softer alloys.

Cons

  • Higher Material Cost: Due to its complex alloying elements (zinc, magnesium), 7075 is considerably more expensive than 6061 and 2024.
  • Susceptibility to Stress Corrosion: It is more prone to stress-corrosion cracking than the 6000 series, often requiring protective coatings in marine or chemical environments.
  • Poor Weldability: 7075 is generally considered non-weldable; localized heating can cause severe cracking and a permanent loss of structural temper.
  • Difficult to Anodize (Cosmetically): While it can be hard-anodized for protection, its high zinc content makes it less ideal for bright, decorative color anodizing compared to 6061.

Applications of CNC Machined 7075 Aluminum Parts

Aluminum parts are widely used across various industries, including:

  • Aerospace Bulkheads & Wing Spars: Critical structural members that must endure massive G-forces while remaining as light as possible.
  • High-Performance Bicycle Components: High-end gears, sprockets, and crank arms that require maximum stiffness and wear resistance.
  • Defense & Ordnance Parts: Precision components for missile systems and firearm receivers where failure is not an option.
  • Injection Mold Tooling: Used for short-run prototype molds because it can withstand high pressures while offering faster heat dissipation than steel.
