Design Advice

  • Design for Anisotropy: FDM parts are inherently weaker in the Z-axis (vertical) due to layer adhesion. Orient your part so that functional loads are distributed along the layer lines (XY plane) rather than across them to prevent premature delamination under stress.
  • Manage Overhangs & Bridging: Avoid overhang angles greater than 45° to minimize the need for support structures, which can leave rough surface scars. For internal gaps, keep bridge lengths under 10mm to ensure clean, sag-free extrusion without secondary support.
  • Minimum Wall Thickness: Maintain a minimum wall thickness of 1.2 mm (typically 3x nozzle diameter) to ensure structural integrity and prevent gaps between perimeters. For fine vertical features, a minimum width of 0.8 mm is recommended to avoid brittle or unstable extrusions.

What’s MJF 3D Printing?

MJF (Multi Jet Fusion) is a high-speed industrial 3D printing technology developed by HP, which uses a thermal inkjet array to selectively deposit fusing and detailing agents across a bed of polymer powder. An infrared heating lamp then uniformly fuses the entire layer in a single pass, enabling fast, consistent production of functional parts with excellent mechanical properties, fine surface detail, and isotropic strength — ideal for both rapid prototyping and low-to-medium volume manufacturing.

Advantages of MJF 3D Printing

Online MJF 3D printing service has many advantages over traditional methods:

  • Ultra-fast batch production: Delivers up to 10x faster print speeds than laser sintering, making it perfect for high-volume orders and quick design iteration cycles.
  • Isotropic mechanical performance: Produces parts with consistent strength in all directions, eliminating the layer-to-layer weakness common in other 3D printing processes.
  • Superior surface quality & fine details: Creates smoother parts with minimal visible layer lines and sharp features, reducing post-processing time compared to SLS.
  • No support structures required: Builds complex geometries, internal channels, and moving assemblies without support material, minimizing waste and enabling design freedom.

FDM 3D Printing Applications

Our online MJF 3D printing services offers a wide range of applications for different types of parts:

  • Low-to-medium volume production parts: Durable end-use components for consumer electronics, industrial equipment, and automotive applications.
  • Functional prototypes & testing: High-performance parts for fit, form, and functional validation in product development.
  • Custom industrial tooling: Jigs, fixtures, and assembly aids for manufacturing lines, produced in days instead of weeks.
  • Medical & dental devices: Lightweight, biocompatible parts such as surgical guides, custom orthotic components, and dental tools.

FAQs

  • Our MJF service supports industry-standard materials including PA12 (Nylon 12) for balanced strength and durability, PA12 GB (Glass Bead Filled) for enhanced rigidity, PA11 for improved impact resistance, and flexible TPU for elastomeric parts. For specialty materials, select ‘Other’ on our quote page and our team will source it for you.

Our standard MJF tolerance is ±0.15mm for most parts, with tighter precision down to ±0.1mm achievable for smaller, less complex designs. MJF typically delivers more consistent dimensional accuracy and smoother surfaces than SLS, making it ideal for parts requiring tight fits.

Standard MJF batch orders (up to 100+ parts) typically ship in 3–7 business days, with rush options available for urgent projects. For small prototypes, parts can be ready in as fast as 24–48 hours, far faster than traditional SLS for equivalent volumes.

Our MJF printers support a maximum build volume of 380 x 284 x 380 mm (15 x 11.2 x 15 in) for single parts. For oversized designs, we can split components into sections and assemble them post-production, or provide design recommendations to optimize for MJF printability.

Choose MJF if you need fast batch production, isotropic part strength, or superior surface quality for functional parts. It outperforms SLS in speed and finish, and offers better mechanical consistency than FDM. For ultra-high detail or visual prototypes, SLA may be a better fit — our experts can help you select the right technology when you submit your design.
